Overlapping Training Plans

Having multiple, overlapping training plans is not conducive to effective training and can potentially lead to more harm than good. It can also be confusing to know which workout for the day you should complete. Why Overlapping Training Plans Are Not Effective Overtraining TrainerRoad Training Plans are designed to progressively load and stress the body so it can adapt and become stronger and faster. By attempting to follow two plans at once, you risk overloading your body beyond its ability to recover and adapt. This can lead to overtraining syndrome, which includes symptoms like persistent fatigue, reduced performance, mood changes, disturbed sleep, and increased susceptibility to injuries and illnesses. In the worst-case scenario, it can lead to burnout, and you may lose your motivation to train altogether. Recovery Recovery is crucial for adaptation and progress. When you do a hard workout, your body needs time to recover and rebuild itself stronger than before. When you follow two training plans at once, you're more likely to have back-to-back hard workouts with insufficient recovery in between. This can hinder your progress and increase the risk of injury. How to Remove Overlapping Training Plans TrainerRoad detects if you’ve inadvertently added an overlapping plan to the calendar. We also prevent plan overlap for all newly created plans. If you’re seeing a notification that you have an overlapping plan, you’ll need to adjust the start date of your training plan in order to proceed. Overlap_Initial.png How to Fix an Overlapping Plan Step 1. Take note of the date range for your first plan. Screen_Shot_2020-12-04_at_11.08.59_AM.png Step 2. Change the start date of plan 2 to be after the end date of plan 1. You can also resolve a conflict by deleting a plan from this window. Note: you will not receive a warning when deleting a plan. The plan is deleted immediately. Overlap_Resolved.png Step 3. Repeat the process for additional overlapping plans (if any). Once overlapping plans have been fixed, the "Update Plans" button becomes clickable to proceed to your calendar. Overlap_Resolved.png How to fix plan overlap while creating a new plan While creating a new custom plan, your start date defaults to today’s date. If you have an existing plan during this date range, you’ll need to either delete your existing plan or adjust the new plan’s start date to after the end date of your existing plan. The error message will no longer appear once the conflict is resolved. Note: if you no longer want the existing plan, you can delete it from this page. Screen_Shot_2020-12-04_at_11.50.12_AM.png

How to Test With the Ramp Test

The purpose of an FTP test is to find your maximum sustainable power output. At TrainerRoad, we do this through the Ramp Test. The TrainerRoad Ramp Test is designed to take you until failure in order to gain an accurate FTP estimation. The test will continue until you either stop pedaling or pause the workout. It will then automatically calculate your FTP and drop you into a recovery interval. The most important advice for completing the Ramp Test is to GO UNTIL FAILURE. Each second matters during the test. Even if you only make it 10 seconds into a new step, that will still factor into your FTP calculation. It's also important to follow the target power closely as you progress through the test. Stay in the saddle the entire time and use a cadence that feels most comfortable. Check out the video below to get an in-depth look at how you should approach the Ramp test. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWHgMzpvH7c For more specific Ramp Test details, click here. How It's Calculated After completing the Ramp Test, we calculate your FTP taking 75% to your highest 1-minute of power. Again, every second matters, so even if you only progress partly through your last step, it will affect the outcome. (Note: More complicated calculations may be applied when determining FTP from a Ramp Test depending on how accurately a rider followed the format of the test. This means, 75% of a rider's 1-minute power may not translate to their actual FTP calculation.) Testing on a Smart Trainer vs. Traditional Trainer When using a Smart Trainer, we do recommend using ERG Mode as it is the default for the test. That being said, a smart trainer is not required in order to complete the test. For traditional trainers, it's very important to focus on following the target profile to the best of your ability. With that, those doing the test in ERG mode do not have an advantage over individuals on a traditional trainer. When To Do an FTP Test? Generally, FTP tests are best done at the beginning of each training block (about every 4-6 weeks). This allows enough time to catch any fitness changes. Additionally, if you’ve taken an extended break from training, it’s a good idea to start with a test. Every TrainerRoad training plan automatically includes the Ramp Test for each training block If all of this seems overwhelming, you’re not alone. Many cyclists find testing cumbersome and draining. With TrainerRoad AI, you can use AI FTP Detection. This feature replaces the need to test. It uses AI to analyze your training progress, relative strengths, previous experience, and many other factors to give you an informed and data-backed FTP. Step Five: Adjust the sliding bar to your desired training approach. Screen Shot 2025-12-30 at 4.08.56 PM.png Step Five: Hit Save! New Plan: Step One: Login to your TrainerRoad account on the TrainerRoad website. Step Two: Select the Training Plans tab and begin building a custom training plan. Step Three: When you reach the Approach step select the box that says Customize by Zone Screen Shot 2025-12-30 at 4.01.25 PM.png Step Four: Adjust each scale to the training approach you would like to target for that zone. Existing Plan: Step One: Login to your TrainerRoad account on the TrainerRoad website. Step Two: Select the Calendar tab from the navigation menu. Each zone will progress independently based on the settings you select. Screen Shot 2025-12-30 at 4.29.21 PM.png Step Six: Select Save to save your updated settings! What Training Approach Should I Choose? For most athletes, a more balanced approach will be the best fit! The balanced approach doesn’t place extra emphasis on intensity or recovery making it a good fit for most athletes. If you are unsure what setting is right for you we recommend starting with the balanced approach and only making incremental adjustments based on how this approach works for you. If you are looking to prioritize recovery in all zones (or a few in particular) then a more conservative approach might be the best setting for you. Choosing a more conservative setting is a good fit if you are someone who has trouble getting quality sleep, is managing a lot of additional stressors outside of your training, or needs extra time to recover from hard training sessions. If you are looking to prioritize intensity and know that you can manage potential burnout then the aggressive setting might be a good fit for you. It is important to note that you are at higher risk of burning out if you choose the overall more aggressive Training Approach or change several zones to be more aggressive. For this reason, we only recommend choosing the aggressive setting if you are an experienced cyclist who manages recovery well and has the time and knowledge to stay on top of nutrition, rest, and sleep.

Training in ROUVY with TrainerRoad: FAQs

Workout Availability and Access What workouts will appear in ROUVY? If you are following a plan, your indoor TrainerRoad workouts scheduled for today will automatically appear in ROUVY. Workouts will not be sent to ROUVY on your plan’s scheduled rest days. If you aren't following a plan, a recommended workout of the day will automatically appear in ROUVY when you open up the app. Where do I find my workouts in ROUVY? Today’s workout appears near the top of the ROUVY app “Home” screen, as well as prominently near the top of the “Workouts” page.  What if my workout doesn't appear in ROUVY? First, check that it is scheduled for today, as workouts scheduled on future days aren’t synced until the day they are scheduled. Any changes in TrainerRoad may take a few minutes to appear in ROUVY. What happens to removed calendar workouts? Workouts removed from your TrainerRoad calendar will also disappear from ROUVY. This might not always happen immediately. Will planned runs sync over to ROUVY?  No, only planned indoor cycling workouts will sync to ROUVY.  FTP and Power Settings Will my TrainerRoad FTP sync to ROUVY? No. While workout targets are based on your TrainerRoad FTP, you'll need to manually update your FTP in ROUVY to match. This only affects the color-coding of workout blocks in ROUVY, not their actual power targets. Will my ROUVY ride count for AI FTP Detection? Yes, TrainerRoad workouts completed in ROUVY count toward AI FTP Detection. Does the sync affect my Progression Levels? Yes, workouts completed in ROUVY will update your TrainerRoad Progression Levels just like regular TrainerRoad workouts. Training in ROUVY Can I still do ERG mode workouts in ROUVY? Yes, though ERG behavior may feel slightly different than in TrainerRoad. Does drafting affect ERG mode workouts? Drafting other riders in ROUVY should have no impact on your ERG workouts. Can I use ERG mode with route resistance? No, ROUVY’s structured workout mode disables terrain resistance. Toggling ERG off in ROUVY during a workout switches to a steady resistance mode that is not impacted by terrain. Can I extend workout segments in ROUVY? No. You can’t extend your warmup and cool down in ROUVY like you do in TrainerRoad. When your structured workout ends, your workout does, too. If you’d like to ride more we recommend starting a new ROUVY activity immediately after your workout. Can I adjust the warmup/cooldown intensity? Yes! ROUVY limits intensity adjustments to 150% of the original target power, though. For higher intensities, you can exit ERG mode and shift into harder gears. What if I want to continue riding after my workout? You can’t keep riding in the same ROUVY activity after completing the structured portion. If you’d like to ride more we recommend starting a new ROUVY activity immediately after your workout. What if I complete my chosen route in ROUVY before finishing my TrainerRoad workout? If you ride to the finish of your selected route before your workout is complete, you'll automatically restart the route. Your workout will not be cut short. Post-Workout and Syncing When will my ROUVY ride appear in TrainerRoad? Rides typically sync within a few minutes. You may need to refresh the TrainerRoad app to see the completed workout. How do surveys work with ROUVY? You'll receive a survey prompt in ROUVY right after completing your workout. You can also complete the survey through the TrainerRoad app. What if I toggle RPE surveys off in ROUVY? If you click "Don't show this again" on the ROUVY postworkout RPE survey screen, you'll no longer receive the survey after your workout in ROUVY. We don't recommend doing this, because your RPE response is very important for TrainerRoad AI to optimize your training. If you do toggle them off, they can be reenabled later from the "General" section of the ROUVY app settings menu. You can also always update your survey response later by clicking the completed workout within TrainerRoad. What appears in Strava after a ROUVY workout? The activity will appear as "ROUVY - [TR Workout title]". You can edit this title in Strava without affecting the TrainerRoad sync. Will my workout visualization look different in TrainerRoad? Yes, completed ROUVY workouts show the map and elevation data rather than TrainerRoad's traditional workout profile. How do I see my workout details in TrainerRoad after completing it in ROUVY? From the calendar, click the workout name in the TrainerRoad Workout box to view the original workout description and details. What appears in my TrainerRoad calendar? Occasionally, for a few moments after completing your workout, you may see both the ROUVY activity and planned TrainerRoad workout. These will merge automatically. How do I know if a workout synced successfully? For planned workouts, the ROUVY icon will appear in the workout’s footer on your TrainerRoad calendar once it’s successfully been pushed on the day it is scheduled. The completed workout will appear in your TrainerRoad calendar with "ROUVY" noted as the source.  Additional Features Will workout instructions appear in ROUVY? Yes, for workouts that include instructions in TrainerRoad. You can check if a workout has instructions on its detail page or disable them entirely through TrainerRoad app settings. Do I need both apps open during workouts? No, you only need ROUVY running to complete your workout. TrainerRoad doesn't need to be open. Do I need to download TrainerRoad to complete workouts in ROUVY? Nope. You don’t need the TrainerRoad app to complete workouts in ROUVY. If you want to make adjustments to your TrainerRoad training plan, build a new plan, or adjust your TrainerRoad settings you can do all of these things from the website. Will outside workouts sync to ROUVY? No, only indoor versions of workouts will sync to ROUVY.  Will group rides and other calendar items sync to ROUVY? No, only structured TrainerRoad workouts will appear in ROUVY.

How to Add Multi-Day Events to Your Calendar

If you’re preparing for a multi-day event like a stage race, training camp, or bike-packing trip, you’ll want to add it to your Calendar as a stage race. This ensures your training plan incorporates it appropriately and supports your performance and recovery across multiple days. How to Prioritize Your Multi-Day Event Before you add a multi-day event, decide how important it is this season. TrainerRoad lets you assign a priority level to each event, which influences how your training plan adapts to support it. A Events: Highest priority events - Your training plan incorporates a full taper leading into this event and a recovery week afterward. - Recommended if this is your main goal of the season or your only event. - You can only have a few A events each year. B Events: Still important, but not your top priority - Includes some extra rest and an opener workout before the event. - No recovery week, but you should start the event feeling fresh. - Good choice if you want to feel strong for this event but are building toward a bigger goal later in the season. C Events: Lower priority events, treated like challenging workouts - No taper or recovery—training continues uninterrupted. - Ideal if your multi-day event is a stepping stone in your larger training journey. Adding a Multi-Day Event Through Plan Builder If you're starting from scratch and don't have a plan built, Plan Builder is the best place to add your multi-day event. Screen Shot 2024-09-12 at 3.55.34 PM.png Once you have done this you will be prompted to choose the start date of your plan. You can start a plan at any time in the future, as long as plans do not have overlapping start/end dates with other plans. Screen Shot 2024-09-12 at 3.56.44 PM.png Step 3: Add Events or Goals Once you have chosen your start date you'll be adding your events or choosing your main goal and discipline! Select the options below for more information on adding events or choosing a goal and discipline. To Prepare for an Event This is where you will add your goal events! These can be added at these three different priority levels: - A Events are your most important events of the season. Your training plan is designed to have you at your best for these events. As such, you can only have a few A events in a year. These events have a full taper before the event and recovery week after. A events should be ideally 12 weeks apart in order to be in peak form for both. - B Events can be seasonal objectives in their own right. They allow you to try different race prep and strategies to see what works for you and your body. B events receive a taper in the week of the event. - C Events are great practice and experience, but the outcome of these races should carry little value. C events will not change your plan. You can treat them like a hard workout. Screen Shot 2024-09-16 at 2.27.17 PM.png If you are unsure what races you are doing or what your final schedule is this upcoming season, no worries. You can always add events to your Calendar after your plan has been built and your plan will automatically adapt around the new additions. With that said we do recommend adding at least 1 “A” priority event to your plan, when you build your initial training plan! Unsure of how to prioritize your races? Check out this blog article for more information. General Fitness Goals If you've chosen General Fitness Goals first you will be prompted to choose the length of your plan. You can choose between a 1 month, 2 month, and 3 month plan or opt for another duration!
