How to Use the Workout Creator on macOS Catalina

If you've recently updated your Mac to macOS Catalina, you might have realized that the Workout Creator doesn't work. That's because macOS Catalina no longer supports 32-bit applications. The Workout Creator runs on Adobe AIR (so does the old Legacy version of TrainerRoad). Although Adobe AIR and the Workout Creator are 64-bit applications, there are 32-bit components that Adobe AIR uses. These are automatically quarantined by macOS Catalina, rendering all Adobe AIR run-times impossible. You might run into an error message like this: air.png And if you've tried reinstalling Adobe AIR, you might run into an error message like this: air2.png But don't worry - we've figured out a way to get around this. It's not the simplest process, but it does work. If you're not too comfortable using Terminal, you can always access the Workout Creator on a Windows machine or a different Mac running an older macOS. We're going to try to make this as simple as possible, though. We just need to delete a file that is located in a bit of a tricky place. We've got two methods to get there. Then we'll need to use Terminal to delete the file. Method 1: Using Finder Step 1: Open Finder - You can open Finder from the Dock - it's this little icon you're probably familiar with: Screen_Shot_2019-10-16_at_10.02.21_AM.png Step 2: Navigate to Frameworks - Use the "Go" option in the menu. Click on "Go to Folder". In the dropdown menu, type in: - /Library/Frameworks Screen_Shot_2019-10-16_at_10.08.03_AM.png - Press "Enter"/"Return" or click "Go". This will navigate you to the appropriate file we want to work with. Step 3: Open Frameworks in Terminal - Right-click on the Frameworks folder. Hover your mouse over the "Services" option, and then click on "New Terminal at Folder": Screen_Shot_2019-10-16_at_9.59.19_AM.png - This should open a new Terminal window that will automatically have you navigated to the correct place. It should look something like this: Screen_Shot_2019-10-16_at_10.10.22_AM.png - Great job! Now skip down to the section below titled "Final Step: Remove Quarantined Bits" Method 2: Using Terminal Step 1: Open Terminal - The easiest way to do this is to type "Terminal" into your Spotlight Search (this is the magnifying glass in the top-right corner of your screen): Screen_Shot_2019-10-16_at_8.57.10_AM.png - Hit "Enter"/"Return" to open Terminal. Step 2: Navigate to Frameworks - You should see something like this: Screen_Shot_2019-10-16_at_8.58.50_AM.png - From there, you can start typing. If you type in cd /Library/Frameworks (and press "Return"), you'll be navigating to the Frameworks folder in the Library of your root directory. This is where you want to be in order to get to the Adobe AIR framework. - Once you do that, type in: - ls (that's a lower-case L) - Then, press "Return". That should display the folders that are now accessible. Screen_Shot_2019-10-16_at_10.30.54_AM.png - You should see Adobe AIR.framework. Now you're ready to move onto the final step. (See, this isn't so hard, is it?) Final Step: Remove Quarantine Bits - Use the ls command here (if you haven't already) to display the folders in the Frameworks directory. You should see the Adobe AIR.framework file listed there. That's our culprit. - From here, use the command: - xattr "Adobe AIR.framework" - Note that you'll need to use the quotation marks since there is a space in the file name. This command shows the extended attributes of a file. - One of these extended attributes is a file called com.apple.quarantine. These are the quarantined bits that we'll need to remove in order to get the Workout Creator working again. - To remove these, use the command: - xattr -d com.apple.quarantine "Adobe AIR.framework" - If you get a line saying that access was denied, use the command: - sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine "Adobe AIR.framework" - Enter your computer's password when prompted and press "Return". - Your Mac will not show that you are typing characters in the box when you enter your password - this is an intended safety feature. Simply type in your password normally when prompted and press enter when done. - Now those quarantined bits should be deleted. Screen_Shot_2019-10-16_at_9.15.30_AM.png - You can run the xattr "Adobe AIR.framework" command again if you want to double-check that the quarantine file is now gone. From there, you should be good to go! Try opening the Workout Creator now. If you're running into any additional problems, reach out to us at [email protected].

TrainerRoad's Workout Creator allows you to replicate an outdoor ride, customize an existing workout or create your own personal workouts. It's available on PC and Mac. Download the Workout Creator from the following links: - Mac Download - Windows Download Note: In order to use the Workout Creator on Windows, Adobe AIR must be installed on your computer. If you don't have it, you can download Adobe AIR here. Workout Creator Features - Creating a Custom Workout - Adding Text to a Workout - Copy/Clone Workouts - Workout Snippets Frequently Asked Questions Is the Workout Creator available for iOS and Android? Workout Creator is currently only available on our Mac and Windows desktop platforms. You'll need to use a laptop or desktop to create your custom workout. But don’t worry! After you publish your Custom Workout from the Workout Creator, it will be ready to use on any of our platforms - including iOS and Android. If I have an electronic trainer, can I designate specific intervals in a custom-created workout to switch out of ERG mode and into resistance or standard mode? No. At the moment, it is not possible to create a workout that will prompt your trainer to automatically switch modes within the workout. All custom workouts will default to the last trainer setting you used. How can I import a workout from TrainingPeaks? Sync TrainingPeaks with TrainerRoad to have your custom workouts automatically sync to TrainerRoad. Note: TrainingPeaks workouts will sync to TrainerRoad two days in advance. How can I import an outside ride that I recorded with GPS? If you have a TCX file from Strava, Garmin Connect, Ride With GPS, or other mapping services, you can use a third-party app called BestBikeSplit to convert the TCX file to an ERG file which you can then import into the Workout Creator. You can learn more about that process here. Can I build workouts using a watt range instead of % of FTP? No. The Workout Creator builds workouts using an exact percent of FTP. We use percent of FTP so every workout scales to your current fitness level. You can still see the wattage while you build. Adjust the % of FTP for an interval and the Workout Creator shows the matching watts based on your current FTP. Why won't the "e" or "d" key type in the Workout Creator? On macOS, the "e" and "d" keys can be claimed by system shortcuts, which stops them from typing in the Workout Creator. The "e" key usually opens Emoji & Symbols and the "d" key usually opens dictation. Step One: Open the Apple menu and select System Settings. Step Two: Select Keyboard, then select Keyboard Shortcuts. Step Three: Select App Shortcuts in the sidebar, then select the + button. Step Four: Set Application to WorkoutCreator. Step Five: For Menu Title, enter Emoji & Symbols exactly as written. Step Six: For Keyboard Shortcut, press Option + Command + E, then select Done. Repeat those steps for the "d" key if dictation opens instead.

Importing a workout from BestBikeSplit

If you have a ride that you've recorded on your head unit or a route created through one of the many mapping applications, you can convert that file into a TrainerRoad workout. The third-party application, BestBikeSplit, allows you to download a ride file (e.g., TCX, etc.) and export it as an MRC file type. Then, you can drag the file directly into the TrainerRoad Workout Creator, and your custom workout will be generated automatically. Note: MRC file type is required to set the correct % of FTP for your interval structure, despite the option to download your file as an ERG or TrainerRoad file type. How Do I Load My Best Bike Split Race Plan Into The TrainerRoad Application? Except from the BestBikeSplit Support article: "TrainerRoad is a great indoor training tool that allows athletes to follow well thought out indoor power workouts. These workouts based on power and duration are typically called ERG (Watts vs. Time) or MRC (%FTP vs. Time) workouts. By combining your Best Bike Split race plans with indoor training provided by TrainerRoad you can start to pre train and get an accurate simulation of how it will feel on race day. We have also created a beta TrainerRoad specific file type that will be enhanced over time. Simple steps for getting race based power workouts transferred from Best Bike Split to the TrainerRoad application. 1. First you must have a Best Bike Split and a TrainerRoad account. 2. Create a Athlete Profile in Best Bike Split to get baseline information such as FTP. 3. Upload a course or courses you wish to model into Best Bike Split in .GPX Track or .FIT Activity format or choose one or more courses from our growing database. 4. Create a race plan based on Goal IF, Time or TSS. 5. From the Race Details page download the ERG, MRC, or TrainerRoad file type. 6. Open the TrainerRoad Workout Creator. 7. Drag the file from your downloads folder onto the left side of the Workout Creator. 8. Name your workout in the Workout Creator and select Publish which is on the lower right. 9. Open the TrainerRoad app and check out your BBS workout under the custom workouts. 10. START THE RIDE!" Best Bike Split is a separate company from TrainerRoad, but we’re big fans of their app and what they do. If you'd like to learn more about how we utilize BestBikeSplit, check out our blog post on How to Build a Race Day Pacing Plan.

Manipulating the Intervals Option #1: Click and drag the interval so it's exactly what you'd like. The center dot moves the interval around in the workout. Dragging the top center dot moves the intensity up or down. Dragging the side dot will shorten or increase the length of the interval. The top corner dot slopes the interval to make progressively more difficult or easy intervals. Option #2 You can manipulate the length and intensity of an interval using the tool at the top of the screen. Add text Now that you've got a sweet workout, it's time to add some text to keep you motivated. You can also add in a workout description and goals to remind you of the workout's purpose when it's in the app just like the other workouts in the TR workout library. Creating a Workout from an ERG or MRC File

Do you have workouts in ERG or MRC format you'd like to use with TrainerRoad? You're in luck! This article shows you how to import those workouts into our Workout Creator so you can use them with TrainerRoad. We currently support ERG and MRC file formats. Just drop the file on the workout list in the Workout Creator, and you'll be prompted to name the new workout. Note: Make sure the extension is all lowercase like ".mrc", though, or else it won't recognize the file type. MRC File Format Here's what an MRC file looks like: [COURSE HEADER] VERSION = 2 UNITS = ENGLISH DESCRIPTION = A description FILE NAME = blah.mrc MINUTES PERCENT [END COURSE HEADER] [COURSE DATA] 0.00 50 6.60 50 6.60 140 7.98 140 7.98 50 9.07 50 9.07 150 10.10 150 10.10 50 14.07 50 14.07 115 22.07 115 22.07 50 32.08 50 32.08 115 40.08 115 40.08 50 51.88 50 [END COURSE DATA] Some notes about the format: - Copy the course header exactly as it is. We don't use most of the fields, however, the MINUTES PERCENT line is important. It tells us what to expect in the columns. - The 'minutes' column should be in decimal format. So 10.50 is 10 minutes 30 seconds. - The PERCENT column should be separated with a tab from the MINUTES column. The values are in percent of FTP. - In general, the points should be in pairs except for the first and last point. For each time, the first entry should be the end %FTP of the last interval and the second entry should be the %FTP that the new interval starts at. - If the time changes and the %FTP changes between two consecutive points, this will create a ramp, changing linearly from the first %FTP to the second over the time difference. For example, the following snippet would create a ramp from 100% to 140% from 6.6 minutes to 7.98. 6.60 50 6.60 100 7.98 140 7.98 50 ERG File Format This is very similar to the MRC file format but you'll specify WATTS instead of PERCENT. Importing an ERG file will convert it to a %FTP workout based on your FTP. Alternatively, you can specify the FTP to use in the header as shown below. [COURSE HEADER] VERSION=2 UNITS=ENGLISH DESCRIPTION=test FILE NAME=ergtest FTP=220 MINUTES WATTS [END COURSE HEADER] Adding text cues You can also add text cues. Just add a section like this in your file after the course data section. [COURSE TEXT] 600 This is a new message 10 615 This message will show up at 10:15 into the workout 10 [END COURSE TEXT] The first column is the seconds from the start of the workout, the second is the message and the third is the duration of the message. Make sure you separate the columns by hitting the "Tab" key.

Workout Snippets

Workout snippets are prefabricated, commonly-used intervals, or sets of intervals, included in the Workout Creator. Use snippets to make creating workouts easier and faster. Walkthrough Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTj0NbRyQic Pre-Made Snippets Stepped Warm Up A nine-minute warm up consisting of increases in power every two minutes. Sweet Spot Warm Up A twelve-minute warm up that includes a three-minute interval spent at "sweet spot". 1-Minute Interval A one-minute interval with a default %FTP of 100%. 5-Minute Interval A five-minute interval with a default %FTP of 100%. 20-Minute Interval A twenty-minute interval with a default %FTP of 97%. Over Unders A five-minute series of intervals that puts the rider slightly above and below their FTP. Note: all snippets' durations and %FTPs can be manipulated. How to Add Custom Snippets Create an interval or set of intervals you'd like to add as a custom snippet. Highlight the interval(s) by clicking and dragging, and select "Add Snippet". Screen_Shot_2021-01-27_at_3.01.47_PM.png How to Use Workout Snippets Inputting snippets into your workout is as easy as clicking and dragging. Simply click the snippet you'd like to include, and drag it to the point in the workout you would like to place it. Of course, you can tweak the start/end time of the snippet once dropped in. You can also edit the intensity (% FTP) of the intervals within the snippet. I accidentally deleted a snippet. How do I get it back? You can repopulate the entire list of pre-made snippets by deleting all of them, closing the Workout Creator, and reopening it. All the pre-made snippets will reappear after this.
