Why is AI FTP Detection Only Available Every 28 Days?

Changes in fitness take time. The physiological process that drives changes in your functional threshold power (FTP) can take months of training, recovering, and getting faster, as your body gradually adapts to repeated training stress. This is why AI FTP Detection isn’t available more often than every 28 days. Updating your FTP too frequently isn’t only unnecessary, but doing so can actually have negative impacts on your training. That’s because structured training is based on the principle of progressive overload, in which carefully chosen workouts incrementally increase in difficulty to appropriately challenge the right physiological systems and build your fitness. Frequent FTP changes can disrupt the pace and magnitude of this progression and can prevent you from completing key sequences of workouts you need to reach your goals. In other words, using AI FTP Detection at intervals of 28 days or longer doesn’t just reflect the gradual pace of changing fitness. It also helps you get the most out of your training and makes you faster. What if my Abilities Change Within 28 Days? FTP is not the only measure of your fitness. Between AI FTP Detections, your Progression Levels monitor your progress and track subtle changes in your abilities from day to day, even when your FTP doesn’t meaningfully change. Progression Levels track your capacity to express your current FTP in different training zones at any given time. For example, increasing your ability to hold steady power within your VO2 Max training zone from one minute to three minutes at the same FTP demonstrates significant progress and is reflected by changes in your Progression Levels. Progression Levels allow TrainerRoad AI to customize your training each day, ensuring that your workouts always match your changing needs. Whether you crush a breakthrough workout or take some unexpected time off, your Progression Levels will respond, and your training will adjust to keep you on track for your goals. Simply put, your abilities will change between AI FTP Detections in ways FTP alone can’t accurately reflect. Progression Levels have you covered, working hand-in-hand with AI FTP Detection to track every change in your fitness, whether big or small, up or down. I Didn’t Accept my Recent AI FTP Detection. Can I Get a New Detection Sooner Than 28 Days? If you keep your current FTP instead of accepting AI FTP Detection’s results, the newly-detected FTP will still be available for you to accept at any time during the next 28 days. Simply click the AI FTP Button from your Account Settings or from any FTP Test, and you’ll again be presented with the option to accept it, along with a countdown to when your next detection will be available. If you haven’t accepted your newly detected FTP and something happens to significantly decrease your fitness within 28 days (for example, if you take extended time off the bike), AI FTP Detection will automatically adjust your still-available prediction downwards to make sure you get the right workouts and power targets. This will prevent you from accepting a too-high FTP, and it won’t affect the 28-day countdown until your next detection is available.

Workout Levels

Workout Levels are a metric within TrainerRoad that provide a way to easily compare the difficulty of workouts. Workout levels compare the relative difficulty of workouts within each energy system and training zone. They range from 1 to 10, with 1 representing an easy workout and 10 being a very difficult one. How are Workout Levels calculated? Workout Levels go beyond traditional metrics, like Training Stress Score (TSS) and Intensity Factor (IF). They utilize TrainerRoad AI's data-driven insights and incorporate nuanced factors such as repetition, interval length, and recovery time to quantify the relative difficulty of each TrainerRoad workout. The result is workout difficulty rankings that are based on real-world experience and easy to understand. Workout Levels are unique to TrainerRoad, using a formula derived from machine learning and based on our extensive data set. Where are Workout Levels displayed? The primary Workout Level for a workout is displayed on the workout profile alongside other workout information such as duration, TSS, and IF. You will see the workout level on all TrainerRoad workouts: Screenshot 2026-07-16 at 3.09.40 PM.png Workout Levels on the Calendar You will also see a workouts primary Workout Level in the upper left hand corner below the title of the workout when viewing an individual workout: Screenshot 2026-07-16 at 3.11.31 PM.png Primary Workout Level for an Individual Workout Note: The only structured workouts without Workout Levels are FTP assessments and custom workouts. When viewing a TrainerRoad workout you will also see the other Workout Levels targeted in any given workout in the Workout Levels chart below AI Predicted Difficulty. These levels show the performance targets for that particular workout relative to your current FTP: Screenshot 2026-07-16 at 3.18.07 PM.png FAQ How are these different from my individual Athlete Levels? Your individual Athlete Levels are a representation of your capabilities within the context of Workout Levels. Workout Levels are ML-driven quantifications of the relative difficulty workouts. Athlete Levels show your relative current abilities across Training Zones. You can check your Athlete Levels in your Career in the relative zone to check what difficulty of workouts are right for you based on your current abilities. Are Workout Levels always comparable? While Workout Levels do give you a good sense of how a workout might compare relative to another workout in TrainerRoad, Workout Levels are not strictly comparable even within one zone. How a workout feels to you can vary from one workout to the next based on the overall structure and duration of the workout. For this reason we recommend using AI Predicted Difficulty alongside Workout Levels for more insight into how your planned training might feel. Are Workout Levels personalized to each athlete? No. Workout Levels are assigned to a specific workout based on its difficulty and are calculated regardless of an athlete's abilities. Individual Athlete Levels are unique to each athlete. Your Progression Levels give you an indication of what workout difficulty you will be capable of completing. Will my custom workouts have Workout Levels? No, custom workouts do not currently have Workout Levels. Will Outside Workouts have Workout Levels? Yes. Every Outside Workout in the TrainerRoad workout library will have Workout Levels assigned to them. If you find an Outside Workout that doesn't have Workout Levels, please contact [email protected]

How to Add Group and Solo Rides to your Training Plan

Following a custom TrainerRoad training plan doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the rides that made you fall in love with the sport. Do you have a local group ride that happens every week? Or maybe you just want to go on a solo ride on the weekends without worrying too much about following a structured workout. If you’ve ever wondered how to fit those rides around your training plan, we’ve made it easy. Now you can build those rides right into your training plan using Plan Builder! Not using a custom plan? Not a problem. You can scroll to the bottom of the article for steps on how to add Group and Solo Rides to your Calendar. How to Create a Plan with Group or Solo Rides Proceed through Plan Builder, on the desktop app, mobile app, or TrainerRoad website, until you reach the Training Schedule step. At this step, you’ll see a preview of what a typical week will look like in your training plan. Each workout can be set to a TrainerRoad Indoor Cycling ride or one of our three Outdoor Cycling options: TrainerRoad Outside, Group Ride, and Solo Ride. Choose which day(s) you want to do a Group Ride or Solo Ride. Each training day of the week has a “difficulty” associated with it: You'll see “Hard Intervals”, “Endurance”, “Easy Ride”, or "Hard Ride". If you swap a “Hard Intervals” day to be a Group/Solo Ride, it will change to a “Hard Ride”. Don’t worry about doing structured intervals that day, but try to go hard whether you’re riding in a group or on your own. And if that ride ends up being particularly brutal, Red Light Green Light will make sure you get proper recovery to avoid burnout. For days that call for Endurance or Easy Ride, try your best to do what your training plan would have prescribed. If you know your ride is going to be hard, we recommend scheduling it on a day that would have been “Hard Intervals”. You can also set the duration of Group Rides and Solo Rides in Plan Builder. From a short 30-minute ride, up to 5 hours long. How It Works Once added to your Calendar, you’ll see Group Rides and Solo Rides built right into your training plan! In place of Progression Levels, you’ll see the difficulty of the day on each workout. And when you open those rides, you’ll have training guidance on how to approach that ride based on the difficulty that the plan calls for. AllCopy.png If a Group or Solo Ride happens to fall on a Red or Yellow Day, they’ll adapt accordingly. Hard Rides will adapt to be Easy Rides, and any ride will adapt to a Rest Day. Screenshot 2024-07-03 at 14.42.02.png How to Replace Workouts with Group or Solo Rides You can replace TrainerRoad workouts in existing training plans with Group or Solo Rides, or vice-versa, right on the Calendar. To change a single workout on your Calendar, simply right-click on the workout you need to change and choose Ride Solo or Ride With a Group from the pop-out menu. To change one of your recurring weekly workouts, click on the plan or training phase annotation on your Calendar (e.g. the name of your plan on your starting date or your Base, Build, Specialty phase) to bring up the Training Plan Overview window. Hover over your Training Days and click Edit Weekly Schedule. You can also click "Edit Plan" to re-enter the Plan Builder flow until you reach the Training Schedule section. From here, you can change any training day of the week to be Indoor Cycling, or Outdoor Cycling with an option of TrainerRoad Workout, Group Ride, or Solo Ride. You can also adjust the duration of each day’s workout, and drag-and-drop each workout to any day of the week. After you’ve made your desired changes, click Update and confirm that you want to overwrite your original plan settings and any previous edits you’ve made. How To Add a Group or Solo Ride Without a Custom Plan 1. Navigate to your TrainerRoad Calendar. 2. Click on the day you want to schedule a Group or Solo Ride. 3. From the menu, choose either "Solo Ride" or "Group Ride" from the menu. 4. Set this ride to be a Solo or Group Ride and fill out the rest of the ride details. Note: You can schedule these rides to repeat in your Calendar, so you won't have to add a ride each week or month if it repeats.

Training Adjustments and Notes

When you need to take time off the bike - be it due to illness, injury, or travel - add a Training Adjustment and TrainerRoad will adapt your training for your goals or events. For any other relevant information that might impact training - fuel intake, hydration status, menstrual cycle - but not require adaptations, add a Note. Screenshot 2024-10-14 at 11.59.19.png What are the Different Types of Training Adjustments and Notes? Time Off Select this option if you have any planned obligations that may interrupt your training, which may include: - Relaxing vacations - Family time around the holidays - Low-stress work functions - A much-needed break from structured training These types of interruptions are unique because, if planned carefully, they can act as recovery time, which helps to minimize their impact on your training. Injury If you sustain an injury, you should consult a medical professional to see how you can proceed. Athletes who take time off from training due to an injury need to be sensible by listening to their body (and physician if applicable), then ease back into their training load. You can account for this time away from training by selecting the Injury option, and TrainerRoad will take care of the rest. Illness If you fall ill, you should rest your body. If possible, meet with a medical professional to determine the full extent of your illness. Enjoy the time out of the saddle and use it as a break from structured training. TrainerRoad will ensure you reach your goals by taking this into account and ensuring your training is still on track by the time you can ride again. Notes Notes are what you make them! Use them to record any pertinent information that could be helpful to plan and analyze your training. As mentioned above, some athletes use Notes to track fuel intake, hydration status, menstrual cycle, race reports, etc. but you can use them however you want. Differences Between Training Adjustments and Notes Training Adjustments (Time Off, Injury, Travel) will prompt a plan adaptation if the it overlaps with scheduled workouts. Notes do not prompt an adaptation if it overlaps on a day of a workout(s). Skipping Workouts While the options above will allow you to account for scheduled adjustments preemptively, simply skipping a workout will still prompt the necessary adaptations with no extra input needed. How to Add a Training Adjustment or Note 1. Click the “+Add” button in the top right-hand corner or select the specific day on the Calendar. 2. Click the preferred option from Training Adjustments or add a Note Screenshot 2024-10-14 at 12.08.43.png 3. Enter the title of the Training Adjustment or Note. 4. Select the date range if the Training Adjustment applies to more than one day. 5. (Optional) Enter any additional information you would like to add in the "Description" box. 6. (Optional) Select the preferred color displayed on the Calendar. How to Edit an Existing Training Adjustment or Note Quick edits can be made to Training Adjustments by right-clicking on them. From here you can edit, delete and change the colour. Screenshot 2024-10-14 at 12.10.58.png To change the title or the description you'll either need to select the Training Adjustment, or select "Edit Time Off" after right-clicking on it. Screenshot 2024-10-14 at 12.13.27.png Once satisfied with those changes, select "Save" and any changes will be applied to that Training Adjustment. If there are any changes to the dates of a Training Adjustment, you will be prompted to adapt your plan to account for the change. Very few of us can execute a full season-long training plan without needing to take time away from the bike, whether for work or leisure, but taking time off the bike doesn’t have to derail your training plan or goals. By adjusting your plan to take into account the time off, you can continue to progress your training at an appropriate pace to make sustainable gains toward your goals. We help you do this by taking the guesswork out of the process and adapting automatically, so it only takes a few seconds to update your training to account for time off, eliminating stress and uncertainty. How does TrainerRoad adapt my plan to accommodate Training Adjustments? We balance your schedule constraints with progressing training at an appropriate pace, taking into consideration both the time off and your future goals. In other words, we’ll keep you on track without throwing you into something too hard right after your time off the bike. Can I delete Training Adjustments if my plan has already adapted around it? Yes. To do this, right-click on the Training Adjustment in your Calendar, then click on the trash icon to delete the time off. We will adapt your plan to reflect the changes. I deleted a Training Adjustment and got different workouts for those dates than were originally scheduled. What happened? We know it can help with motivation to keep things fresh! This means the workouts that are added back to your plan after you delete a Training Adjustment take into account a few things, including how your training has been going and ensuring to add a little variety to the mix. For example, if you’ve increased your Progression Levels since creating the initial Training Adjustment, TrainerRoad will take that into account when adapting your plan. I’m in the middle of a block, but when I added a planned vacation to my Calendar, the adapted workouts include a Ramp Test when I get back from vacation. Why is that? If your time off means you’ll go more than 14 consecutive days without completing a workout, you may want to re-test and see where your FTP settled. You can easily get back on track, but to do so effectively will require recalibrating your power zones after a period of time away from the bike. I just came down with a cold, and I’m worried this is going to mess up my training. What should I do? Go to Calendar and add a Training Adjustment. Choose “Illness” as the type, and select the range of dates you think you’ll be away from training. Save the it and adapt your plan when prompted. TrainerRoad will adapt your plan around the time off. If you don’t need as much time away from the bike as you thought, you can edit the Training Adjustment date range and adapt your plan again. TrainerRoad will adapt your plan around the shorter time off. You can do the same if you need more time off the bike; just click into the Training Adjustment and extend the date range as needed. Save and adapt your plan. I have to miss one workout this week. Should I add a Training Adjustment Training Adjustment, or just skip the workout and leave it on my Calendar? You can do either. If you add the Training Adjustment ahead of time, TrainerRoad will adapt your plan before you miss the workout. If you skip the workout but leave it on your Calendar, it will suggest adaptations the following day. The only difference will be when you see the plan adaptations; choose one method or another won’t affect how TrainerRoad adapts your plan.

General What is Plan Builder - Plan Builder creates a custom training plan that brings you to peak fitness for your goal event or discipline. Plan Builder takes into consideration your goals, how much you want to train and when, all of the events on your training calendar, and the demands of your goal event to give you a truly customized training experience. Why Plan Builder? - Plan Builder accounts for all of the unique variations in your training schedule, event schedule and lifestyle that might affect the progression of your training plan. By adjusting your training plan in accordance with your needs your plan will be easier to follow and ultimately more effective. Where Do I Start? - If you don’t have a training plan, you can jump straight into Plan Builder. 1. To start constructing your custom training plan, first, go to your online career. 2. Screen Shot 2025-01-16 at 11.30.13 AM.png Is Plan Builder available in the TrainerRoad app? - Athletes can build their custom Plan Builder plans via the desktop apps or the TrainerRoad Website. With that said, we recommend building your training plan on the website as the website's version of Plan Builder has added functionality. - To use Plan Builder from within the desktop app, make sure you're on the latest app version, then go to the Training Plans section of the app. How Plan Builder Works How did you come up with the recommended training volume? - The recommended training volume is based on your training approach and the amount of training you have completed in the past few weeks of training. I want to start my training plan in the past. Can I do that? - Yes! If you have already started training you can backdate the plan by selecting the date you started training this season. Why didn’t Plan Builder suggest the Base, Build and Specialty phases in order? - It is very rare that your available training time will perfectly align with the length of a Base, Build, and Specialty Phase training progression, so adjustments need to be made. When these adjustments are needed, Plan Builder uses the latest sports science research and millions of training data points to create the ideal training progression to bring you to peak fitness. Why is Plan Builder suggesting I go back to the Base Phase in the middle of my plan? - In many cases, athletes with less experience doing structured interval training benefit most by spending more time in the Base Phase. Additionally, a mid-season return to base training can allow the body to recover from more strenuous forms of training, and reach new heights by entering a base phase with a higher FTP. Why is Plan Builder suggesting I go to a Specialty Phase in the middle of my plan? - Plan Builder strategically uses different training phases to increase fitness and freshness in order to make you as fast as possible for your goal event. In many cases, the Specialty Phase can be a great opportunity for the body to increase freshness without losing fitness. This is particularly true for athletes with a lot of experience doing interval training and serves as a great mid-season reset point for any rider, especially during long training progression Why is Plan Builder suggesting I do more than one Build Phase? - Athletes that have a moderate level of experience with interval training can benefit from more time spent in the Build Phase to fully reach their potential. Doing too many weeks in a row of Build training can be extremely fatiguing, so Plan Builder will split up excessively long Build Phases with a Base or Specialty Phase. Events What if I don’t have any goal events? - No events, no problem! If you aren't training for an event you can build a goal Based training plan. What if I have multiple priority events? - You can add as many C events and B events as you’d like, but A events (priority events) must be spaced eight weeks apart. Anything less than 8 weeks between goal events won’t allow you enough time to recover and rebuild sufficiently to reach peak fitness once again. - If you have two priority events within 8 weeks of each other, evaluate which event is not as important and make one event an A event and the other event a B event. You will still have rest allocated before the B event but you will only have a taper and a peak for the A event. What if my priority event is a multi-day event? - If you are training for a multi-day event, mark your event as a ‘Stage Race’ when you categorize the discipline of your event My stage race includes multiple disciplines. Which should I choose for "targeted discipline" - Mark the event you’d like to prioritize as the targeted discipline. You’ll taper for the entire stage race, but your Specialty training will be geared towards your targeted discipline. What if I already have events on my Calendar? - If you already have events on your TrainerRoad calendar Plan Builder will accommodate these events. If you’d like to start fresh you can delete the current events on your Calendar and add them when you use Plan Builder. For more information on how to delete events check out this help center article: Editing Your Calendar What if I need to add events later on? - New events can be added at any time. If you would like to add additional events to your TrainerRoad Calendar go ahead and check out this help center article: Add A/B/C Priority Events What if my goal event is more than a year away? - Plan Builder will create a training plan for any event within two years of the day you’ll start training. What do you mean by A, B and C Events? - Categorizing your events as A, B and C events is an easy way to prioritize the importance of your events. For more information on prioritizing events go ahead and check out this help center article: Prioritizing Races (A, B & C Races) Do I need an A Event for Plan Builder? - If you plan on racing, at least one of your events should be an A-priority event. If you aren’t sure which event you would like to make your A event check out this help center article on prioritizing events: Prioritizing Races (A, B & C Races) What if I want to train for a whole series of events instead of just one event? - If you are training for an entire series, we still recommend you make one event within that series an A race, and marking the rest as B races. This will allow Plan Builder to bring you to peak fitness. Plan Builder will build in tapers, rest and openers around the existing events, so your training will be kept on track. I don’t know what sort of event my race is. What should I pick? - If you don’t know what sort of event your race is, select the discipline that is closest to the type of event you plan on racing. I am training for a time trial distance other than 40k. Does Plan Builder work for that? - Yes. When creating the event, enter the event duration and intensity and Plan Builder will take care of the rest. Adjusting Your Custom Plan What if I need to take time off? - When you need to take time off you can edit your Calendar to adjust for time spent off the bike. For detailed instructions on how to edit your training plan check out this help center article: Editing Your Calendar What if I have already started training? - You can use Plan Builder even if you are in the middle of a training plan right now. Note that this will only delete planned workouts - any workouts you have completed will be saved. For detailed instructions on how to delete a custom training plan check out this help center article: Delete/Unschedule a TrainerRoad Plan What happens to my current training rides if I delete/unschedule my current training plan? - When you delete your current training plan to add a custom plan all of your completed workouts will remain on your Calendar. If you create a new plan, you can add these events to your plan by clicking the "Include" button in the Existing Events section of Plan Builder. Should I take the Ramp Test before I start Plan Builder? - The Ramp Test will automatically be the first workout in any training phase or plan. If you are just starting a TrainerRoad plan, we definitely recommend starting off with this workout. If you have recently completed a Ramp Test in another training plan you can skip this Ramp Test at your own discretion. I don’t have much time until my goal event. Can Plan Builder create a training plan on a short timeline? - Absolutely! Plan Builder will build a training plan for your goal event, as long as you have at least one week until the event. I want to train on different days than Plan Builder suggests. Can I change that? - Definitely. You can customize the schedule of your training week during the "Schedule" section of creating the plan. Simply drag and drop your training days. Can I decide which days I want to train outside? - Yes! When you create the schedule for your training plan you can mark specific days in your training week as outside rides. You can do this one by one, or adjust this per training block when building your custom plan. After your plan is made, you can change any workout to be an outside or inside workout on the fly. Can I change my training volume halfway through my plan? - You can change the number of days in your training plan at any point after Plan Builder has made your custom training plan. To change the training volume of your plan after it has been built, follow these steps: 1. Go to your online career. 2. Select the Calendar tab in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen. 3. Navigate to your current training block, or the block you are about to start. 4. Select the Block on your Calendar: 5. In the menu that appears on the right select 'Edit Weekly Schedule' 6.
