How Does Power Smoothing Work?

Because power is an inherently sensitive measurement, it can appear that you're not maintaining target power during your workout. In reality, it's likely your average power is right on the money. To make sure athletes don't get distracted by seemingly "jumpy" power readings, we've enabled Power Smoothing.

Power Smoothing applies a rolling average of 1-30 seconds to your power data in the data field of the workout player. You can control your Power Smoothing settings from the Settings section of the apps.

Note: Power Smoothing settings do not apply to the actual graph of your power.

How to Choose a Power Smoothing Setting

The right Power Smoothing setting can depend on the type of workout you're doing.

For example, a Power Smoothing setting of 10 seconds (or higher) will make more sense for longer duration intervals, while a setting of 3 seconds is a better fit for short, higher intensity intervals.

It ultimately comes down to personal preference. The important thing to remember is this only affects the Power section of the data field. This won't smooth the graph of your power.

Note: Power Smoothing doesn't affect the functionality of ERG mode or PowerMatch in any way.
