How to Add Group and Solo Rides to your Training Plan

Following a custom TrainerRoad training plan doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the rides that made you fall in love with the sport. Do you have a local group ride that happens every week? Or maybe you just want to go on a solo ride on the weekends without worrying too much about following a structured workout. If you’ve ever wondered how to fit those rides around your training plan, we’ve made it easy. Now you can build those rides right into your training plan using Plan Builder! Not using a custom plan? Not a problem. You can scroll to the bottom of the article for steps on how to add Group and Solo Rides to your Calendar. How to Create a Plan with Group or Solo Rides Proceed through Plan Builder, on the desktop app, mobile app, or TrainerRoad website, until you reach the Training Schedule step. At this step, you’ll see a preview of what a typical week will look like in your training plan. Each workout can be set to a TrainerRoad Indoor Cycling ride or one of our three Outdoor Cycling options: TrainerRoad Outside, Group Ride, and Solo Ride. Choose which day(s) you want to do a Group Ride or Solo Ride. Each training day of the week has a “difficulty” associated with it: You'll see “Hard Intervals”, “Endurance”, “Easy Ride”, or "Hard Ride". If you swap a “Hard Intervals” day to be a Group/Solo Ride, it will change to a “Hard Ride”. Don’t worry about doing structured intervals that day, but try to go hard whether you’re riding in a group or on your own. And if that ride ends up being particularly brutal, Red Light Green Light will make sure you get proper recovery to avoid burnout. For days that call for Endurance or Easy Ride, try your best to do what your training plan would have prescribed. If you know your ride is going to be hard, we recommend scheduling it on a day that would have been “Hard Intervals”. You can also set the duration of Group Rides and Solo Rides in Plan Builder. From a short 30-minute ride, up to 5 hours long. How It Works Once added to your Calendar, you’ll see Group Rides and Solo Rides built right into your training plan! In place of Progression Levels, you’ll see the difficulty of the day on each workout. And when you open those rides, you’ll have training guidance on how to approach that ride based on the difficulty that the plan calls for. AllCopy.png If a Group or Solo Ride happens to fall on a Red or Yellow Day, they’ll adapt accordingly. Hard Rides will adapt to be Easy Rides, and any ride will adapt to a Rest Day. Screenshot 2024-07-03 at 14.42.02.png How to Replace Workouts with Group or Solo Rides You can replace TrainerRoad workouts in existing training plans with Group or Solo Rides, or vice-versa, right on the Calendar. To change a single workout on your Calendar, simply right-click on the workout you need to change and choose Ride Solo or Ride With a Group from the pop-out menu. To change one of your recurring weekly workouts, click on the plan or training phase annotation on your Calendar (e.g. the name of your plan on your starting date or your Base, Build, Specialty phase) to bring up the Training Plan Overview window. Hover over your Training Days and click Edit Weekly Schedule. You can also click "Edit Plan" to re-enter the Plan Builder flow until you reach the Training Schedule section. From here, you can change any training day of the week to be Indoor Cycling, or Outdoor Cycling with an option of TrainerRoad Workout, Group Ride, or Solo Ride. You can also adjust the duration of each day’s workout, and drag-and-drop each workout to any day of the week. After you’ve made your desired changes, click Update and confirm that you want to overwrite your original plan settings and any previous edits you’ve made. How To Add a Group or Solo Ride Without a Custom Plan 1. Navigate to your TrainerRoad Calendar. 2. Click on the day you want to schedule a Group or Solo Ride. 3. From the menu, choose either "Solo Ride" or "Group Ride" from the menu. 4. Set this ride to be a Solo or Group Ride and fill out the rest of the ride details. Note: You can schedule these rides to repeat in your Calendar, so you won't have to add a ride each week or month if it repeats.

How Does Power Smoothing Work?

Because power is an inherently sensitive measurement, it can appear that you're not maintaining target power during your workout. In reality, it's likely your average power is right on the money. To make sure athletes don't get distracted by seemingly "jumpy" power readings, we've enabled Power Smoothing. Power Smoothing applies a rolling average of 1-30 seconds to your power data in the data field of the workout player for the interval you are currently in. You can control your Power Smoothing settings from the Settings section of the apps. Note: Power Smoothing settings do not apply to the actual graph of your power. powersmoothing_hero_image.png How to Enable Power Smoothing in Mobile Step 1. Launch the TrainerRoad App Step 2. From the navigation menu, select Settings powersmoothing_RN1.jpeg Step 3. Under the Power Smoothing section of the Settings menu, drag the slider to adjust from 0-30 seconds. powersmoothing_RN2.jpeg How to Enable Power Smoothing in Desktop Step 1. Launch the TrainerRoad App Step 2. From the navigation menu, select Settings powersmoothing_electron1.png Step 3. Under the Power Smoothing section of the Settings menu, drag the slider to adjust from 0-30 seconds. powersmoothing_electron2.png How to Choose a Power Smoothing Setting The right Power Smoothing setting can depend on the type of workout you're doing. For example, a Power Smoothing setting of 10 seconds (or higher) will make more sense for longer duration intervals, while a setting of 3 seconds is a better fit for short, higher intensity intervals. It ultimately comes down to personal preference. The important thing to remember is this only affects the Power section of the data field. This won't smooth the graph of your power. Note: Power Smoothing doesn't affect the functionality of ERG mode or PowerMatch in any way.

Ramp Test FAQs

The Ramp Test is our preferred method for getting an effective estimate of Functional Threshold Power: a measure of cycling performance and the metric used to guide all TrainerRoad workouts. To learn more about FTP testing and the Ramp Test, click here. Ramp Test - Frequently Asked Questions How does TrainerRoad calculate my FTP from the Ramp Test? We take 75% of your best one-minute power. If you are above target for the final minute, the app will reduce your result by a small amount. It’s important to follow the target power closely as you progress through your test. How hard should I go during the ramp test? For the most accurate results, give the ramp test everything you've got. At the end of the testing section, you should have nothing left in the tank. I didn’t immediately stop pedaling immediately after I failed the test. Does this affect my FTP calculation? Nope! Your FTP is based on your best one-minute power, not your last one-minute power. So, soft-pedaling or grinding gears after finishing the ramped section will not affect your FTP score in any way. What if I think my score is too high? If you score slightly higher than you expect, we recommend you still keep the Ramp Test result and see how training goes. You might surprise yourself with how much you're able to handle. Our workouts are designed to be pretty challenging, but doable. If you are able to successfully complete the first several workouts using your Ramp Test FTP, you'll know that you're using the correct FTP. That said, if you find that you are unable to complete many of your prescribed workouts, you can go ahead and decrease your FTP in 2-5% increments as needed. What if I think my score is too low? If you score slightly lower than you expect we recommend you still take the Ramp Test result and see how training goes. In particular, pay attention to how you're able to handle threshold work or any VO2 max efforts. If you feel that typically very hard workouts are just too easy, you can always manually adjust your FTP on your Account page. We recommend adjusting in 2-5% increments as needed. If you think your FTP result is much lower than it should be we recommend to check the following: - Did you REALLY dig deep and go hard? - Do you have excessive fatigue going into the test? - Did you have a major power dropout during your Ramp Test? - Were you able to achieve a level of performance similar to recent PRs? - Did you follow the target power closely? - Remember, the app will reduce your result by a small amount if you are above target for the final minute I’m a steady-state athlete (TT or triathlon). Should I do the Ramp Test or is the 20-minute test a better assessment for me? We recommend the Ramp test. Even though the intensity of the effort required during the final steps of a Ramp Test is well above the intensity required during a longer, lower-intensity effort, the information gleaned from the ramp protocol is more accurate than an FTP estimate based on a poorly paced 8- or 20-minute test. With a sufficient level of commitment and freshness, this format leaves little room for error in cyclists of all disciplines. I went into the test fatigued and got a low score. I thought the new test is less dependent on fatigue? While the new test may take less time and may exact a smaller physiological toll on the athlete, it is not any easier. You need to be reasonably recovered and prepared for any assessment workout in order to obtain usable results. Can/should I do the Ramp Test more often than the 8/20 minute tests? We still recommend assessing every 4-6 weeks. If you’ve taken more than 3-4 weeks off from training, resume training following an FTP assessment. Do you still have the old 8 and 20-minute tests? Yes! The 8 minute and 20-minute tests aren’t going anywhere, and you can still use them if you prefer them. Can I increase the warmup? We don't recommend increasing the warmup, but it can be done if necessary. Due to the very low-intensity nature of the warmup and the fact that it’s scaled to your previous or predicted FTP, this assessment incorporates a sufficient warm-up period that will adequately prepare riders for the higher-intensity steps that will close the ramp assessment. If, however, you’d prefer to add a few extra minutes of warmup time prior to beginning the Ramp Test, do so every time you perform a Ramp Test in order to keep the results and protocol consistent. Should I do this test in ERG mode? If you have a smart trainer we recommend that you do the test in ERG mode (default). A smart trainer is not required and those doing the test in ERG mode do not have an advantage over individuals on a traditional trainer. What is a good ride to do after the Ramp test to keep my TSS® in line with the 8/20 minute tests? It’s not required to do a workout after the Ramp Test. But for riders who want to get a little work in, we recommend actively recovering for 10-15 minutes followed by one of these workouts: - Carter - Birch - West Vidette - Pettit - Homers Nose - Bald Knob Why can't I find the Ramp Test in the app? Make sure that your app is up to date. The Ramp Test is not available on some older versions of the TrainerRoad. If it's still not showing up, check to see if there are filters enabled that might be hiding the app from your workouts list. Note: The Ramp Test is not available in our Legacy app. Legacy users will need to continue using the 8- and 20-minute FTP tests. If you have any questions about this, please contact our support team at [email protected].

Using Entertainment with TrainerRoad

features-entertainment_720.jpg TrainerRoad lets you choose your own entertainment while you train. You can do your workout while watching your favorite show on Netflix, catching a new film on HBO Max, or jamming out to the hottest new playlists on Spotify. Whatever entertainment you would like to use while you train, you can use it with TrainerRoad. By giving you the freedom to choose your own entertainment, we are able to focus on what we do best, making you a faster cyclist. Here is how to set up your entertainment before you start your workout. On Windows and Mac Step One: Open TrainerRoad and load your workout. Step Two: Place TrainerRoad in Minimal Mode. minimal1.png Step Three: Open Netflix, Hulu, or another media player, and position the windows so you can see the video and the workout. .png Step Four: Put the video in full screen by tapping the "f" key or selecting the full screen icon on the video player. Select Start Workout on the TrainerRoad screen and you are ready to go. minimal3.png On iPhone and iPad On iPhone and iPad you can float a video on top of the TrainerRoad workout player using Picture in Picture, so you do not need a second screen. Picture in Picture works with video opened in the Safari browser rather than a native streaming app. We have tested YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, and Twitch. Step One: Open your video in Safari and put it in full screen using the full screen icon in the bottom right of the video player. IMG_0044.PNG Step Two: Two icons appear at the top of the screen. One is an "X" to leave full screen, the other resizes the video so it floats on your screen. Select the one that makes it float. IMG_0045.PNG Step Three: Leave Safari and open TrainerRoad, then select your workout. IMG_0047.PNG You can resize the floating video and move it around. Early in a workout the bottom right corner works well, and toward the end the bottom left is better, so you can still see where you are in your interval along with your ride metrics at the top of the screen. IMG_0033.PNG Let us know at [email protected] if you find other video sources that work in Safari.

How to Change Workout Intensity

This article will teach you about the intensity of workouts and how to manipulate this variable. Intensity Factor (IF)® Defined The Intensity Factor of a ride is defined as how intense/difficult the ride is. An IF of 1.0 is equal to an all out, one hour effort. An IF of .7 means the rider will be working at 70% of their all out pace for the hour. This is a quick way to gauge how hard your workout will be. How does IF display on screen? Screen_Shot_2017-04-11_at_12.38.27_PM.png Notice the green line labeled as "Actual" in the key. This green line also indicates the IF of your ride in comparison to the IF of the prescribed workout. If the green line lays directly atop the course profile (as it does in the screenshot below), that indicates the workout will be completed at the prescribed IF. How to change the Intensity of a Workout First, open the workout. Then, find the box in the lower left-hand corner of the screen that allows you to adjust the workout's intensity (screenshot below). This tool allows you change the IF of the workout while keeping the workout's intervals the same. Note that the course profile of the ride below has the same intervals, but a higher IF and higher power. Desktop intensity_electron.png iOS/Android intensityRN1.PNG intensityRN2.PNG How will the course profile and green IF line display during the ride and on my Career page? If you change the IF of a workout, the course profile will adjust accordingly and an inflated or deflated course will display for the duration of your ride. After you complete your ride, the workout will display on your Career page in its original form. However, the green "Actual" or IF line will display the intensity of the workout that you did. The screenshot below is an example of what a ride with a manipulated IF looks like on your Career page (without the power data). Screen_Shot_2017-04-11_at_6.00.05_PM.png What do I do as I become stronger? Changing the IF can be an interesting change of pace to a favorite ride, but this feature should not be used as a substitute for changing your FTP as you get stronger. Update your FTP rather than increasing the IF of rides. This way, your TSS numbers will be more accurate.

Speed/Distance on an Indoor Trainer

Relevance of Speed Indoors A common area of confusion involves the relevance of speed readings when doing indoor rides. Are indoor speed readings accurate? Do indoor speed readings matter? The short answer is — no. TrainerRoad currently doesn't display speed readings during Power or VirtualPower-based workouts. The "speeds" riders achieve indoors are often not representative of speeds they'd be going outdoors at equivalent power levels. Simply put, indoor speed readings can be misleading and don't really add any value to the workout. Speed Readings and VirtualPower First, an understanding of what VirtualPower is and how it's derived will be useful in moving forward. Now that you know speed is used to calculate VirtualPower readings, keep in mind that not all VirtualPower curves (the trainer's speed to power ratio) are very "road representative". Furthermore, something called "rolling resistance" can affect speed readings indoors. For our purposes, rolling resistance is defined as the amount of pressure placed on your rear tire by the trainer's roller. See the Tire Tension section of this article for more information. Speed Readings and Smart Trainers Speed readings taken from a smart trainer set in ERG mode are arguably the least reliable. Having a basic understanding of how ERG mode works will be useful before reading on. Speed readings are not reliable in ERG mode because the trainer will automatically adjust the resistance to ensure the rider is matching their wattage target — regardless of their gear or speed. For example, a rider could shift gears and/or increase their cadence to bring their speed from 20-40mph during an interval with a prescribed wattage of 250. In order to keep the rider at 250 watts, the smart trainer will automatically adjust the resistance to make up for the change in speed. This means the rider's speed readings will indicate 40mph while their watts remain at 250. If the rider shifts back down to 20mph, the trainer will again adjust accordingly so they are still holding 250 watts. (Incidentally, we recommend that you find a gearing/cadence that suits you and stick with it for the duration of your workouts in ERG mode. Shifting or drastically altering cadence can be disruptive to the workout as it takes the trainer several seconds to adjust.) Virtual Speed and Distance If you want a more accurate estimate of your speed and distance indoors we recommend using Virtual Speed. Virtual Speed is a TrainerRoad metric that uses power data and a physics-based model to estimate more realistic speed and distance data for your indoor TrainerRoad workouts that sync to Strava. To learn more about Virtual Speed and Distance and how to enable it check out: How to Enable Virtual Speed and Distance for Strava Viewing Speed Although we don't display it live, TrainerRoad does record speed. If you upload your workout via .fit file to a 3rd party application you will be able to view speed and distance data. Option #1 (3rd-Party Site via Desktop App): 1. Open the TrainerRoad app and go to your Career tab Screen_Shot_2020-09-08_at_2.59.57_PM.png 2. Find the workout you'd like to download, and click to the right of the workout's thumbnail for more options 3. Click the "Download" button that will appear 4. Upload the .fit file to the third-party (Training Peaks, Garmin Connect, Strava, etc.) of your choice. Option #2 (3rd-Party Site via Online Career): 1. Open the workout in your online Career page 2. Click the "Download" button in the upper, right-hand corner of the screen download_web.png 3. Upload the .fit file to the third-party (Training Peaks, Garmin Connect, Strava, etc.) of your choice.
