Having problems pairing a device? Let's figure out what's going on with your device to get you back up and running. Device Walkthroughs We have detailed walkthroughs for all the different types of devices along with individual troubleshooting for different types of devices. Device Walkthroughs Problems with Bluetooth Smart (4.0) Detection devicetroubleshooot_electron.png device_troubleshootRN.PNG If TrainerRoad can't detect your Bluetooth Smart (4.0) devices on your computer we have an article that will help you with the system and hardware requirements. Bluetooth Smart (4.0) Requirements Problems with ANT+ USB Stick Detection devicetroubleshooot_electron.png device_troubleshootRN.PNG If TrainerRoad can't find your ANT+ USB Stick we have a troubleshooting article to help you get going. ANT+ USB Stick Troubleshooting WiFi Signal Interference ANT+ and Bluetooth both operate on 2.4 ghz and can be affected by WiFi routers, microwaves and other bluetooth devices. If you're having pairing/drop out issues it's best to eliminate these variables and then bring them back one at a time. If you find that a WiFi router is interfering, read our WiFi troubleshooting article. Other problems If you are still experiencing problems please check out our device dropout article. Device Dropout Troubleshooting Sensor Battery When a device battery gets low, the reception gets worse. Try replacing the device battery. Some devices report their battery condition over ANT+ and we display that on the Devices page. But it is not a universal feature, and speed/cadence sensors can't report it due to a protocol limitation. If your head unit picks up the signal, but TrainerRoad does not, try moving your bike setup closer to your ANT+ USB stick. Sometimes a couple feet can make a big difference. Still having issues? Drop us a line at [email protected] and we'll get any device pairing issues you have sorted out.

ANT+ USB Stick Troubleshooting

If you're experiencing issues pairing your ANT+ devices to TrainerRoad, you're in the right place to get some help. This article will help you identify problems with your USB stick or your computer. These are the same steps that our support crew use when you e-mail us, so please make sure you try these steps before contacting us. If you are unsure of what you need to use ANT+ devices with TrainerRoad, you can learn all about it in the ANT+ article. Step 1: Plug the ANT+ USB Stick into Your Computer or Device This is what you will see if the ANT+ USB stick is not plugged into your computer's USB port or is not recognized. If the ANT+ stick is plugged in and still not recognized, there may be something wrong with the stick or your computer's USB port. Screen_Shot_2020-05-15_at_10.24.12_AM.png Step 2: Install Device Drivers If you're on a PC, make sure you've installed the ANT+ USB Stick and Bluetooth Drivers. For Mac users, there is no need to install these. Apple computers come with the necessary drivers already installed so you can skip this and continue to the next step. How to Check for Installed Drivers To check if the drivers are installed, go to "start" and type "Device manager". Load the program called device manager. The device might be displayed in two different locations. libusb-win32-devices Universal Serial Bus controllers Trouble installing drivers? If it looks like the drivers won't install, the next step is to try another USB Port. If that doesn't work, try installing the drivers on another computer. If you still can't install the drivers on another computer, it is likely that you have a bad ANT stick and will need a new one. If you have access to another ANT+ USB stick, try that on both computers and see if the drivers will install. It's also possible the driver was corrupted or changed by your OS or another software program. To fix this, you can uninstall your device drivers and perform a fresh install by following the instructions on this page. Drivers install on another computer, but not the one you train with? We've seen this a few times and there's not much we can do. There is likely a system-level problem keeping you from installing the drivers for the USB stick. A refresh of the operating system is often needed. This is depressing, I know. This occurs because there is a system-level problem between the operating system and Garmin's drivers for the ANT+ stick. Make sure that you test that ANT stick on more computers and USB ports on your computer before you reach this drastic level of refreshing your OS. Step 3: Check for Conflicts If the drivers are installed properly, but TrainerRoad cannot find the ANT+ USB stick, there may be conflicting programs as only one program can access the ANT+ USB stick at a time. Check for Garmin ANT Agent, or Garmin Express in the system tray. If that program is on, make sure you exit it. See screenshot examples below, or watch this video on How to Disable Garmin ANT Agent. With Garmin Express, you'll need to make sure that it's closed fully, and not running in the background, which it can default to. Check your system taskbar to ensure that it isn't running. If it is still in your taskbar, follow the images below to exit it. Garmin Express (PC) Garmin Express (Mac) Garmin ANT Agent (Mac) Make sure to select "Quit" to exit out of Garmin Express entirely. Garmin_Express_Quit_PC.png Have an Acer or other computer with Soluto installed? We've seen some pre-installed software on Acer computers (and some others) that mess with ANT+ USB sticks. If you have an Acer computer, you can manually stop these interruptive programs. 1. Go to start, then type "taskmgr". 2. Go to the process tab and look for something called "Soluto". 3. If you see that process, click on it and click "end task". 4. If that fixes the problem, you'll want to use the Soluto uninstall tool and remove it from your computer. Note: If you can't download the Soluto Uninstall Tool above by clicking it, please try right-clicking it and copying the link address to open it in a new tab. Step 4: Check if Garmin Express Can Detect the Stick If TrainerRoad can not find the stick, and there are no conflicting problems then we want to test the stick in Garmin's software to make sure it works. Open Garmin Express and locate it in the system tray (PC) or taskbar (mac), and click to open it. Make sure to close out of the Garmin Express window once done testing, and to close it from the taskbar as shown in the photos above. Working: Device is Connected and Active PC Example garmin-ant-agent-working-stick.PNG Mac Example Not Working: Device is Not Connected and Inactive PC Example garmin-ant-agent-not-working-stick.PNG Mac Example What do I do if Garmin ANT Agent/Express does not detect the ANT+ USB Stick? If the drivers are properly installed and Garmin ANT Agent/Express can't detect the stick, you'll want to repeat the process on another USB port on your computer. If you get the same result try it again on another computer. If you can't get TrainerRoad or Garmin ANT Agent/Express to detect the USB stick, you likely have a bad ANT stick and should return/exchange it from your place of purchase. Windows 11 ANT+ Drivers After updating to Windows 11, Athletes may lose the ability to pair with their ANT+ devices. This is because ANT+ drivers do not come preinstalled with Windows 11. To get ANT+ drivers on your Windows 11 PC, follow the steps below. 1. Windows Settings" ⚙️, open Updates and hit Check for updates. Note: If it already says you’re up to date, you will still need to prompt a new check. 2. In theAdvanced Options menu, click on ‘View optional update 3. Expand the list of driver updates. Locate the ANT+ driver (it shows up as Dynastream Innovations), select it, and press ‘Download and install’ to complete the process. This should get you the correct drivers. Some athletes get a notification in their notification panel asking them to finish installing the drivers. If this happens to you, confirm the installation, and you should be set! Still having problems? If you've gone through all the steps above, shoot us an email at [email protected]. To help us with the ticket, please let us know your username, your operating system, your computer brand, how the above steps went for you and what kind of ANT+ USB stick you have, details below to figure out what kind of stick you have. Don't know which type of USB stick you have? There are two kinds of ANT+ USB sticks to choose from: USB 1.0 and USB 2.0. USB 1.0 can connect up to 4 devices at a time, while USB 2.0 can handle up to 8. Most newer sticks will be 2.0 since 1.0 is no longer in production. For more information on how ANT+ works with TrainerRoad and which dongles we recommend, please visit the article on ANT+ Connectivity.

Scroll down to where you see the PowerBeam Pro listed, and click "Pair." If you have an older Power Beam Pro, clicking "Pair" may not be successful. If this is the case, you can connect with TrainerRoad by clicking "Legacy" instead of "Pair." Note: The PowerBeam Pro works best when it's paired first — before any other devices. It won't pair if you're trying to pair other devices such as heart rate monitors at the same time. Once the device is paired, it's time to do a Spindown Calibration. A Spindown Calibration aims to quantify the variable of rolling resistance (affected by tire pressure and trainer pressure) in order to get more accurate power readings. This should be done often, not just on the initial setup. Doing it every other ride, or even every ride, isn't a bad idea. After pairing the device, look for the "Spindown" button below the mode selection button. Step 1. As indicated in the window below, maintain a speed between 18-22mph for 120 seconds. Step 2. After maintaining the speed for the indicated time, stop pedaling and let your bike coast to a stop. Step 3. Once your bike has coasted to a stop, you should see the following message. Click "Done" and you're ready to ride! Troubleshooting Connection Problems? Visit our Device Pairing Troubleshooting page. ANT+ USB stick Issues? Visit our ANT+ USB Stick troubleshooting page. Spindown Calibration Problems? Have you been spinning down your PBP and TrainerRoad says something like there's 65,000 seconds left? That's actually the PBP's way of indicating that something went wrong with the spindown. This is usually due following the spindown steps incorrectly. This error can also be caused if the signal was interrupted during spindown. In order to fix this, try the following: - - Unplug your PBP for about 5 minutes and reconnect your power cord to your PBP (restart it) - Restart TrainerRoad

This may not always be 100% accurate given potential changes in ride data throughout pedal stroke especially during periods of inconsistent cadence. For best results, the use of a dedicated cadence sensor is suggested, but not required. [2] ANT+ USB or key may be required to connect to ANT+ devices. [3] In order to use Bluetooth on Windows devices, a Bluetooth dongle is required. See more information here. [4] Cadence is not a feature that the KICKR supports. In order to have cadence with TrainerRoad using this trainer, you will need a dedicated cadence device. How to Use Your KICKR - Choosing Your Connection - Connect via ANT+. - Connect via Bluetooth. - Click here to learn how to pair your devices and adjust device settings. - Choosing Your Trainer's Mode - Erg Mode (default) - Resistance Mode - Calibration - Perform a Spindown calibration before each ride to ensure that your power is always as consistent as possible. - Note: KICKR v5's and newer models (any model past 2018) automatically calibrate on the fly as you ride. There's no need to calibrate manually with a spindown due to this functionality. You can learn more about this self-calibrating process here. - PowerMatch - Using a power meter along with your trainer? Here's how to use PowerMatch. KICKR Troubleshooting Device Dropouts - Dropouts can be seen while riding as an absence of data. You may be experiencing device dropouts if your data values drop to zero, or to a null '--' value. - Why this happens: The most common culprit of dropouts are typically low batteries which cause a weak signal, and interference from other nearby devices. - The solution: Click the following link to learn how to avoid device dropouts. ANT+ USB not recognized - Click here to learn more about ANT+ Troubleshooting. Bluetooth not connecting properly - Click here to learn more about Bluetooth Smart 4.0 Troubleshooting. Issues pairing your device - When trying to pair your device if you're unable to see, or pair your device properly, there may be a connection issue. This could be caused by a faulty connection with the device or another application may be using your Bluetooth or ANT+ connection. - The solution: Click on the following link to learn more about device pairing troubleshooting. Wattage Floor - It takes a minimum amount of watts to simply turn the pedals on a bike. This minimum wattage requirement can increase even more in higher gears. For more information on wattage floor and what it can look like, click here. - The solution: Change into an easier gear. This will allow your trainer to spin slower thus allowing it to reach lower power values. Inaccurate Speed - Speed readings when riding indoors on a smart trainer are inherently unreliable. The "speeds" riders achieve indoors are often not representative of speeds they'd be going outdoors at equivalent power levels. - Simply put, indoor speed readings can be misleading and don't add any value to the workout so TrainerRoad does not display them during your ride. To learn more about speed readings on a smart trainer, click here. Floating Power / Power Not Following Prescribed Power - Dropouts can cause your power values to get "stuck" in place and follow a constant power rather than changing with the workout profile. - The solution: Avoiding dropouts will help reduce the possibility of this happening. - Wattage floor/ceiling - If you find that your power is floating above your prescribed power, typically during a recovery interval, you may be experiencing wattage floor. - The solution: Change into an easier gear. This will allow your trainer to spin slower thus allowing it to reach lower power values. To learn more about what a wattage floor is, click here. - Power smoothing set to too high of a value can give the illusion that your power is not following the target power when in reality, it is. Power smoothing takes a running average of your incoming power over the span of time that you have selected in your settings, 1-30 seconds. Your average power over that time span is then shown on your workout player. - Common cases - You would notice this at the onset of an interval. When the interval starts, you may notice that your power is lagging behind quite a bit and then eventually rises to meet the prescribed wattage. This is due to the running average that's being calculated. - The solution - To fix this, you may need to lower your power smoothing value in your settings. If power smoothing is desired, we recommend adjusting your settings to around 4-7 seconds for most workouts. This should allow you to visually smooth your power while still allowing it to your power to catch up quickly when entering intervals. - NOTE: PowerSmoothing only visually adjusts your power during your workout. Only raw data is stored during your ride. Due to this, you may notice a difference between post, and during, workout graphs. - ERG Mode Not Set: If your trainer is set to resistance mode (or slope/standard mode with some trainers) your power will not be automatically adjusted to match the target power. In this case, your power may be graphed similarly to that of a power meter and float around without following any workout profile. Resistance Lock-up During Ride - When pedaling at a low cadence, or if you change during a change in prescribed power, it's possible that your KICKR can dramatically increase the resistance and prevent you from pedaling as the resistance continues to climb. - The solution: Begin backpedaling for around 5-10 seconds as the resistance unit loosens its grip. Then carry on pedaling. Erratic Power Values and Dropouts: Generation 1 KICKR Only - If you're using a generation 1 KICKR (notice it does not have a handle and it has a zebra pattern opposite the cassette) and you're experiencing wildly fluctuating power, or a continual dropout, you may need to clean your optical sensor. - To clean the optical sensor, gently rub a paper towel through the area shown below. image-2.png image-3.png KICKR Best Practices Calibration - For the most accurate and consistent power readings, make sure to perform a spindown calibration before each ride. - If time allows, the optimal solution would be to perform a spindown calibration after spinning for around 5-10 minutes to warm up internal components. Update Firmware - Updating your trainer's firmware to the latest release is very important. Many of these updates contain fixes that the manufacturer has been working on. Updating your firmware whenever the latest release is available will make sure that your device is always up-to-date with the most recent features and improvements. - To update your KICKR's firmware using an Android device, follow the directions found here. - To update your KICKR's firmware using an iOS device, follow the directions found here. Gearing - When using ERG mode, follow the gearing suggestions found in our smart trainer modes explained article for best results. - If using resistance, or standard/slope mode, you will need to make sure to shift your gears just as you would when riding outdoors. Doing so will allow you to reach your prescribed target power during your workout.

Tire Pressure - To ensure that you're experiencing the most consistent training with a wheel-on trainer, make sure to check the following: - Calibrate before each ride - Ensure that your tire is inflated to the same pressure before each ride. Trainer Contact Pressure - To ensure that you're experiencing the most consistent training with a wheel-on trainer, you should make sure that your trainer contact pressure is the same each time that you install your bike on the trainer. When tightening the roller onto your wheel, once the trainer touches the wheel, turn the knob 2-3 full rotations. Remember how much you tighten this tension before each workout and follow the same steps each time you place your bike back on the trainer.

This will allow your trainer to spin slower, thus allowing it to reach lower power values. Automatic Resistance Control (ERG) mode is not working - If you're pairing your Bkool Pro 2 via Bluetooth, your trainer will only be able to be paired as a power meter. Using this method of pairing will only allow power data transfer without the ability to manually or automatically control resistance levels - The Solution: In order to pair your trainer as a smart trainer, you'll need to pair via ANT+ instead. - Note: Bkool had indicated that there was a bug in their firmware that caused the resistance adjustment problems many Bkool users were experiencing. Not to worry though! They've released a firmware update with a fix for this, which is necessary for the best performance and functionality. Please read this article for instructions on how to update the Bkool firmware. Bkool Pro 2 Best Practices Update Firmware - Updating your trainer's firmware to the latest release is very important.

Resistance Lock-up During Ride - When pedaling at a low cadence, or if your change cadence during a change in prescribed power, it's possible that your KICKR Snap can dramatically increase the resistance and prevent you from pedaling as the resistance continues to climb. - The solution: Begin backpedaling for around 5-10 seconds as the resistance unit loosens its grip. Then carry on pedaling. Tire Slippage - If you find that your tire slips when pedaling, you may need to increase the tension between your tire and the trainer. - Solution: Tighten the trainer contact knob in 45-degree increments until the slippage stops. Also, make certain that your tire is inflated to the proper pressure as this will help the contact pressure between the two surfaces. KICKR Snap Best Practices Calibration - For the most accurate and consistent power readings, make sure to perform a spindown calibration before each ride. - If time allows, the optimal solution would be to perform a spindown calibration after spinning for around 5-10 minutes to warm up internal components and tire to trainer contact. USB1 vs USB2 ANT+ Sticks

If you're using TrainerRoad on a desktop or laptop computer with ANT+ devices, you probably already know that you need an ANT+ USB stick. There are two types of ANT+ USB sticks: the USB1 and USB2 stick. Depending on your computer and device setup, the type of USB stick you use can matter. Differences between USB1 and USB2 The primary difference between USB1 and USB2 is the number of ANT channels the stick supports. The number of channels determines how many devices the stick can handle, as each connected device operates on a single channel. USB1 has 4 channels (and can thus connect up to 4 devices) whereas USB2 offers 8 channels (and can thus connect up to 8 devices). USB2 not only offers the ability to pair more devices, but it also features more robust connections once devices are connected. Determining what kind of USB stick you have ANT+ USB1 sticks are no longer in production. All recently purchased ANT+ sticks will be of the USB2 variety. However, if you're using an older ANT+ stick, there's a chance it may be USB1. You can tell if your ANT+ stick is a USB1 model in two ways: 1. The stick will be labeled "USB1-Wireless USB Stick" on the reverse side of the stick. 2. If you have a Garmin-manufactured stick, the inner portion of the plug-in point will be white. If neither of the above are applicable to your ANT+ stick, it's probably USB2. Additionally, all mini ANT+ USB sticks are USB2. When do I need a USB2 ANT+ stick? The above ANT+ USB sticks are all examples of USB2 products. TrainerRoad Mac Legacy (Adobe Air) Desktop App: USB1 dongles will work with TrainerRoad Legacy (Adobe Air) on Mac Desktops unless you're trying to pair a Wahoo KICKR. You will need a USB2 dongle to use the Wahoo KICKR with the TrainerRoad Legacy desktop app. Note: if you've updated to the new Mac app, you will need to use USB2. TrainerRoad Windows and Mac Desktop App: USB1 sticks are not supported on either our Windows Desktop or new Mac Desktop software. You'll need a USB2 stick no matter what devices you're pairing. Where can I buy a USB2 ANT+ stick? TrainerRoad Recommends: Mini Garmin ANT+ Stick A great ANT+ USB stick option — and it's small enough to stay plugged in when you aren't training. Suunto Movestick Mini The Suunto Movestick Mini is another great option that's also small enough to stay plugged in. Docooler ANT+ Stick A good, more affordable option for an ANT+ USB dongle. Live in Australia? Aussie users will need to pick up an ANT+ stick from an Australian vendor or a local bike shop instead of the Amazon links above. Problems Connecting Your Devices?
